Man journeys. The first humans travelled from location to place for different purposes. Of these reasons, diet was the primary cause. There was no agriculture in the beginning. Men came together and walked the vastness of the world together, seeking more than the food they all wanted. When man met his most fundamental need, he became conscious of other desires that needed focus. He was obliged to cover himself in the chilly nights. When it rained, chilly nights were exacerbated and the rising heat as the sun went up over him encouraged him to invent shelter. But the warmth provided by the shelter didn’t deter him from travelling.
Later innovations helped him fly quicker, such as the wheel. Having domesticated working livestock, man undertook long-distance journeys. In order to carry greater loads, transport vehicles have grown in capacity. The increase in size allowed an increase in pull power in order to sustain or increase travel speed. With this growth, in size and load power, passageways had to be increased. To push through what we now recognise as roads and highways, the foot route grew broader and harder.
First of all, it was just a gravel lane. Out of his innate imagination, man invented ways to allow highway changes to properly fit the increasingly sophisticated transport vehicles. He learned to think about ways to continuously enhance the design and maintenance of roads to provide travellers with convenience and protection. The soft dirt lane, when soaked under heavy rains, became particularly troublesome. To toughen the road, gravel and rocks were compacted into earth. It was strengthened by Scotsman John Loudon McAdam’s innovative road building method, utilising stones no larger than 2 inches each. It was named after him and became known as the Path of Macadamia.
Using cement as binder, the next change was concreting. Further study contributed to the paving of asphalt houses, which for the following reasons was an overlay of asphalt concrete on top of the cement concrete road:
Reduced wear and tear on rubber tyres
A smoother surface that results in less bumpy or smoother drives
Noise created by friction between tyre and road decreased or softened
The road’s longer life cycle
From time to time, minor advances arising from continuous testing are implemented into the road building sector, supplying us with more and more convenience and road protection. More recent study directions include environmental sustainability by environmentally sustainable methods such as paving natural asphalt systems.
